FAQ
Everything about visiting Zaanse Schans
Questions we get asked all the time — answered honestly.
Getting there
The easiest way is by train from Amsterdam Centraal to Zaandam (12 minutes), then bus 391 to Zaanse Schans (10 minutes). The whole journey takes about 25–30 minutes. Alternatively, bus 391 runs directly from Amsterdam Sloterdijk. By car it's a 20-minute drive via the A10 and A8 — take exit Zaandam-West.
Yes — there is a paid car park right at Zaanse Schans, approximately €10 per day. It fills up quickly in summer, so arriving before 10am is strongly recommended. Our dock at Schansend 1, 1509 AW Zaandam is a 5-minute walk from the main car park.
Our dock is at Schansend 1, 1509 AW Zaandam. It is located right at the edge of the Zaanse Schans village, at the water's edge. When you arrive at Zaanse Schans, walk towards the river and look for the boats — you'll see us. Google Maps: link here.
Yes — it is about 17 km from central Amsterdam and takes roughly 50–60 minutes by bike. The route follows the Zaan river and is largely flat and well-signposted. You can lock your bike near the entrance to Zaanse Schans.
Bus 391 runs between Amsterdam Sloterdijk station and Zaanse Schans. Journey time is about 30 minutes. Combined with the train from Amsterdam Centraal to Sloterdijk (5 minutes), it is a straightforward connection. Check the NS app or 9292 for live timetables.
Admission & costs
Yes — walking around Zaanse Schans is completely free. There is no entrance gate and no ticket needed to enter the village, stroll along the river, or view the windmills from outside. Note: there is conflicting information online suggesting an entry fee is charged — this is incorrect. The area is publicly accessible at no cost. Some individual attractions inside the village (such as windmill interiors, the Zaans Museum, and certain workshops) charge their own separate entry fees, but these are optional extras. Our boat tours are separately ticketed from €9 per person.
Entering the Zaanse Schans area itself is free. Individual windmill interiors typically charge a small entry fee — usually €4–6 per adult. Not all windmills are open to the public at the same time; check the Zaanse Schans website for which ones are open on your visit date.
Yes — the Zaans Museum charges a separate entry fee. It is not included in any Zaanse Schans 'entrance ticket' (which does not exist) and is booked independently. The museum covers the history of the Zaan region, Dutch trade and industry.
Our public windmill cruise starts from €9 per person (children) and €11.50 for adults. The Flower Boat starts from €11.50 for children and €14 for adults. Private tours start from €179 per hour for up to 12 people, or €250 per hour for our large boat (up to 40 people). All prices include your skipper, guide and all taxes.
Planning your visit
Spring (April–May) is the most popular time, with tulips in bloom nearby and mild weather. Summer (June–August) is the busiest and most lively — ideal for boat tours, but book ahead. September and October offer beautiful light and far fewer crowds. The windmills and river are open year-round, though some attractions have reduced winter hours.
Early morning (before 10am) is by far the best time — the crowds arrive mid-morning and the car park fills quickly. The light on the windmills is also beautiful in the early hours. For a boat tour, morning departures offer the calmest water and best photography light.
Most visitors spend 2–4 hours exploring the village, windmills and workshops. If you add a boat tour (25 minutes for the public cruise, or 1–4 hours for a private tour), half a day is comfortable. A full day allows you to visit the Zaans Museum, eat at one of the local restaurants and take your time.
Overwhelmingly yes — it is one of the most authentic and visually striking Dutch heritage sites. Unlike some tourist attractions, the windmills at Zaanse Schans are real working mills, the houses are genuinely historic, and the setting on the Zaan river is beautiful. Our boat tours are consistently rated 4.9 out of 5 across 892 Google reviews, with guests calling it a highlight of their entire trip to the Netherlands.
Quite a lot. The Zaans Museum covers regional history and the Dutch Golden Age. You can visit a working clog (wooden shoe) maker, a traditional cheese farm, an authentic oil mill, and an 18th-century paint mill. The Tea House on the waterfront is a lovely spot for a break. And of course, our boat tours take you past all the highlights from the water — including the chocolate factories, which you can literally smell as you cruise past.
Yes — there are several cafés and restaurants in the village. The historic Tea House on the waterfront is a popular choice. There are also pancake restaurants, a cheese tasting shop and basic snack stands. For a sit-down lunch or dinner, the nearby town of Zaandam has more options.
The boat tours
Yes — we strongly recommend booking in advance, especially in peak season (May–September). Tours do sell out. You can book online via FareHarbor on our website. Same-day bookings are sometimes available but not guaranteed.
The public windmill cruise is approximately 25 minutes. You will pass all 10 windmills, the historic wooden houses, whale-hunting heritage sites, the cacao factories and the Tea House — with a personal guide narrating the whole way.
The public cruise runs on a fixed schedule with up to 25 passengers per departure. It lasts 25 minutes and is the most affordable way to see Zaanse Schans from the water. A private tour gives you the whole boat exclusively for your group, with a flexible departure time and duration (1–8 hours). Private tours include a dedicated skipper and personal guide and are often better value for groups of 6 or more.
All our tours are in English. Our skippers and guides speak fluent English and tailor their commentary to the group. Dutch-speaking groups are of course also welcome.
Yes — you are welcome to bring your own food and drinks on a private tour. We also have drinks packages available (from €8 per person per hour for basic drinks, or €10 for luxury). Our partially closed boat has a built-in BBQ, fridge and coffee machine, so you can turn your tour into a proper occasion.
We run tours in most weather conditions — a light drizzle rarely stops us. Our partially closed boat is ideal for unpredictable Dutch weather as the roof is fully adjustable. We only cancel in cases of strong winds or lightning. If we cancel, you will receive a full refund or be offered a reschedule.
Absolutely. Children of all ages are welcome on our tours. Kids under 12 receive a discounted ticket. Our skippers are experienced at making tours engaging for families — one reviewer mentioned that her 6-year-old was even allowed to briefly help steer the boat, which made her day.
Practical information
The Zaanse Schans village is largely flat and accessible for pushchairs (prams). For wheelchairs, most of the outdoor paths are accessible, though some of the historic buildings have steps. Our boats can accommodate pushchairs. For specific accessibility needs, please contact us before booking so we can ensure the right boat is arranged for you.
Yes — dogs are welcome at Zaanse Schans and on our boats. Please keep them on a lead when boarding and on the water.
Dress for the weather — the Zaan river can be breezy even on warm days, so a light jacket is always useful. Comfortable flat shoes are recommended for boarding. There is no strict dress code.
Our dock address is Schansend 1, 1509 AW Zaandam. This is the departure point for all our tours. KvK: 71842705. You can also reach us by email at ahoy@dutchboattours.nl or by phone at +31 757 810 027.
Keukenhof (the famous tulip garden) is about a 45-minute drive from Zaanse Schans, making a combined day trip possible by car, though tight. More comfortably, Zaanse Schans pairs well with a morning in Amsterdam or a visit to nearby Zaandam city. Most visitors treat it as a half-day trip from Amsterdam.
We'll let our reviews speak for themselves — 4.9 out of 5 from 892 verified Google reviews, making us the highest-rated boat tour operator at Zaanse Schans. Guests consistently mention our skippers and guides by name and describe the tour as a highlight of their entire trip.

"Frits went out of his way to include my 6-year-old daughter — even letting her help steer the boat, which completely made her day. It’s rare to find someone who connects so naturally with children. Highly recommend, especially for families."
