Dutch Windmills Explained: How the Zaanse Schans Mills Work
To most visitors a windmill is a pretty silhouette against a Dutch sky. But the great mills at the Zaanse Schans were never decoration — they were factories. Three centuries ago this stretch of riverbank was the most concentrated industrial powerhouse on earth, and the machines that ran it were built entirely of timber, canvas and wind. Here is how they actually work, and what they were really for.
The windmills of the Zaanse Schans look almost identical from a distance, but each one was a specialised machine doing a different job. Understanding what they made — and how they turned moving air into useful power — transforms a stroll along the river into something genuinely fascinating.
What the windmills actually made
These were not flour mills romping through fields of grain. The Zaan mills were heavy industry. Some were sawmills, slicing imported logs into the planks that built the Dutch merchant and naval fleet. Others were oil mills, crushing linseed and rapeseed into oil for paint, soap and food. Paint and pigment mills ground minerals and dyes into the powders that coloured ships, houses and the canvases of the Dutch Masters. And spice and mustard mills milled the peppercorns, mustard seed and cocoa that flowed in from across the world.
Put together, the region produced timber, paint, oil, paper, snuff, chocolate, mustard and more — an entire manufacturing economy powered by nothing but the breeze coming off the North Sea.
How a windmill actually works
A windmill is a beautifully simple idea executed with astonishing craft. Four great sails (also called sweeps) catch the wind and begin to turn. Each sail is a wooden lattice that the miller dresses with canvas — more cloth in a light breeze, less in a gale — so he can tune the speed by hand.
The turning sails drive a horizontal shaft, which meets a huge wooden gear wheel called the brake wheel. Through a clever arrangement of interlocking wooden teeth, that horizontal motion is turned ninety degrees into a vertical spinning shaft running down through the mill. At the bottom, the power is put to work — spinning heavy millstones that grind pigment or spice, driving the saw frames that cut timber, or lifting the great stamps that press oil from seed.
The cleverest trick is up top. The whole cap — the roof carrying the sails — can rotate. When the wind shifts, the miller pushes a long tail-pole on the ground and the cap swings round until the sails face squarely into the wind again. It means the machine can chase the wind all day, whichever way it blows.
Why the Zaan became the world's first industrial zone
Two things made this little region extraordinary. The first was wind: flat, open and constant, with nothing to block the breeze off the sea. The second was water. The river Zaan was the region's highway. Raw materials — logs from the Baltic, seeds, spices, minerals — arrived by boat, were processed in the mills crowded along the bank, and the finished goods sailed straight back out the same way.
Because power, transport and raw materials all met in one place, the mills multiplied fast. At its peak the Zaan region held more than 600 working windmills, packed shoulder to shoulder along the water. It was, in every meaningful sense, the first industrial zone the world had ever seen — running on renewable energy long before anyone thought to call it that.

The mills you can still see today
Of the hundreds that once stood here, a handful survive on the Zaanse Schans — and several still turn and still work. Each tells a different part of the story:
- De Kat — the last working windmill of its kind in the world that still grinds pigments and chalk into paint, exactly as it supplied artists and shipbuilders centuries ago.
- De Zoeker — an oil mill, where seed is crushed and pressed into oil under enormous wooden stamps.
- A sawmill — watch the wind drive the saw frames up and down through a log, the engine room of the Dutch shipbuilding boom.
- A spice & mustard mill — where peppercorns, mustard seed and other spices are still milled the traditional way.
You can climb inside several of them, watch the gears turn, and often buy the very paint, oil or mustard the mill produces that day.
Seeing them today — the view from the water
Here is the detail most visitors miss. The mills were built along the river for a reason, and the side that faces the Zaan was their working face — where boats loaded and unloaded, where the whole machine was designed to be seen. Walk the footpaths and you see the backs and the crowds. From the water, you see the row of mills exactly as they were meant to be viewed: lined up along the bank, sails turning, with open sky behind them.
